CSE Hosts an Evening with John Smoltz
June 05, 2015

ATLANTA -- CSE celebrates long-time client, John Smoltz, on his upcoming induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame, Class of 2015. Friends and family gathered at CSE’s Atlanta headquarters on Thursday, June 4 to honor Smoltz including legendary players Tom Glavine and Dale Murphy along with Ernie Johnson Jr., Jeff Foxworthy and John Schuerholz.  The Hall of Fame induction ceremony will take place in Cooperstown, NY on July 26.

Guests arrived to the sounds of authentic baseball radio calls and experienced video highlights of Smoltz’s career played on screens around the building.  CSE also featured projection mapping of Turner Field, Smoltz on the mound, a mockup of the Braves locker room and select memorabilia such as the 1995 Championship trophy. In addition, exclusive Fatheads of Smoltz, scheduled to launch in July, were on display. CSE Evolve created holograms of key memorabilia from Smoltz’s personal collection paired with audio by Smoltz describing the item and its importance to him.  The items included:

  • 1992 NLCS MVP Award
  • 2002 NL Rolaids Relief Award
  • 1997 NL Silver Slugger
  • 1995 World Series Painting
  • 3000K Jersey

As part of the evening, long-time friend of Smoltz, Jeff Foxworthy said, “He’s not only a baseball Hall of Famer, he’s a Hall of Fame human being.”

Ernie Johnson introduced Smoltz and shared some personal memories before the Hall of Famer began his speech. Ernie opened by noting, “There’s no better man than Smoltz. The man that he is off the mound is a testament to his brilliance.” Smoltz began by thanking his teammates, most notably Tom Glavine and Greg Maddux, "We got to see each other at our worst,” said Smoltz. “I loved every moment of competing with them.” Smoltz went on to acknowledge CSE CEO, Lonnie Cooper, “Lonnie and his team have been an intricate part of my career, I appreciate his friendship and for going over and beyond to honor me tonight.”

And as an added bonus, CSE worked with the Hall of Fame to feature the following items for display:

  • Warren Spahn Milwaukee Braves uniform shirt worn on 9/2/61 for his 305th win, tying him with Eddie Plank for most wins all time by a left-hander
  • Chipper Jones Braves Jersey from 2012, the last of his 19 big league seasons with Atlanta
  • Baseball signed by the 1995 World Series champion Atlanta Braves

Smoltz, a former Major League Baseball pitcher and active sportscaster, is best known for his prolific career of more than two decades with the Atlanta Braves, in which he garnered eight All-Star elections and received the Cy Young Award in 1996. Though predominantly known as a starting pitcher, Smoltz was converted to a reliever in 2001, following his recovery from Tommy John surgery, and spent four years as the team's closer before returning to a starting role.

“John has had an amazing career and I’m thrilled that he is being recognized for all he’s brought to the baseball community,” says Lonnie Cooper, agent of John Smoltz and CEO of CSE.   “We wanted to celebrate this time with John and his family and friends and show how much we appreciate his loyalty to us.”

Smoltz is the only pitcher in major league history to top both 200 wins and 150 saves. He became the 16th member of the 3,000-strikeout club on April 22, 2008 when he fanned Felipe Lopez of the Washington Nationals in the third inning in Atlanta.

On January 13, 2009, Smoltz signed a contract with the Boston Red Sox and then moved to the St. Louis Cardinals where he retired from play. To honor his legacy, the Atlanta Braves retired Smoltz's number, 29, in 2014.  Currently, Smoltz is a national analyst for MLB Network and Fox Sports calling the 2014 MLB postseason.
